Kevin Flude is a historian who has lectured on the history and archaeology of London for more than two decades as well as directed the transformation of the Old Operating Theatre Museum to an award winning boutique museum and notable heritage destination.
His book In Their Own Words centres on a series of historic and literary quotations examining the origins of London and the activities and life of the Britons, Romans and the early English. The quotations illustrate the way that the ancients felt about events that unfolded before them. They give insights into past lives, hopes, fears and prejudices.
Our role as designers has been to act as a bridge between the material and the book as object, between writer and intention and to make the content of the book accessible to its audience. Our work focused on creating a clear hierarchy that highlighted the historical material and was also able to connect to the rest of the book. We developed a design that is rooted in authenticity, but expressed in a pure, clean and contemporary way.
